Gillingham manager Mark Stimson will still send a side to Tonbridge

Gillingham insist that they remain committed to meeting Tonbridge Angels this season for a benefit match in memory of Jack Maddams.

Angels released a story on their official website stating that they were “disappointed that Gillingham FC have informed us they are unable to commit in the pre-season friendly they had planned.”

But Gills manager Mark Stimson was quick to point out that his side will not renege on a game he personally agreed to play.

Stimson said: “There seems to be a misunderstanding between ourselves and Tonbridge Angels. I personally spoke with Jack’s father and agreed that Gillingham would play a tribute match in memory of Jack during the 2008/09 season.

“Tonbridge decided that they would like to arrange a pre-season friendly but by the time they approached us unfortunately our pre-season schedule was fully booked up.

“I will be contacting their secretary as agreed to arrange a fixture during the season, at a time convenient to both clubs.”

Maddams died from a heart attack a week before his 18th birthday and was a former youth player for both Gillingham and Tonbridge.
