Defender Joe Martin is hoping to give the Gills fans something to celebrate at the County Ground.

Gillingham have failed to return home from Gills Swindon with a victory in their last seven visits – with their last win coming back in 1982.

A simmering rivalry between the clubs has existed since the 1978/79 season, when on-field hostilities led to hospital visits and court appearances. Relations have been strained ever since.

“There is a bit of history between the clubs and so it will be interesting,” said the ever-present left-back.

“We are both well matched up and it will be an interesting game and one that is important to both of us.

“There are things that have happened in the past, a few years ago but for the fans, it is important still.

“As players we have a job to do and it would be nice to go and win for the fans because there is a bit of ill-feeling between them.”
