GILLINGHAM needed a Michael Flynn free-kick to rescue them during a drab Boxing Day clash with Bristol City.

Flynn's 35-yard effort earned Ronnie Jepson's side a point, against a resurgent Bristol City side at Priestfield, stalling Gills' recent home winning run.

The Gills were aiming for a fifth straight home league win but against Gary Johnson's fighters they were lucky to get a point.

The visitors had gone ahead after Scott Murray found space in the Gills box, calmly putting his side one up after only ten minutes, as he fired low past Jason Brown from close-range.

After a dull first half, Gills' supporters finally had something to cheer about on 69 minutes, when Flynn struck a low free-kick past substitute 'keeper Steve Phillips, to put the home side on level terms.

Matthew Jarvis came close to handing Gillingham a late winner, only to drag his shot wide, leaving his side to settle with the solitary point.
