BARRY ASHBY: Tough task ahead

GILLINGHAM centre-backs Barry Ashby and Chris Hope are steeling themselves for their biggest test of the season when they attempt to subdue Rotherham's in-form strike partnership of Darren Byfield and Alan Lee at Millmoor on Saturday.

Ashby, who this week shook off a thigh injury to declare himself fit, describes the 16-goal pair as a surprise package who will not be underestimated.

Both strikers brought their personal goal tallies to eight-a-piece with one each against leaders Portsmouth last week in their continuing demand for respect from Division 1 defences.

Defensively, Gillingham will be looking for their first clean sheet in 10 league games.

Ashby said: “Who would have thought at the start of the season these two lads would be so close to being into double figures midway through October. They are a real surprise package."
