SOURCES close to Gillingham claim Dave Bassett underwent an interview at the Priestfield on Tuesday as the club accelerate their search for a new boss.

It is thought the club want to appoint the new manager sooner rather than later following the departure of caretaker boss John Gorman, who took over at League 2 side Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday.

Gorman said: "I would have loved to be the manager of Gillingham but morally, for me, it wouldn’t have been the right thing to do.

“Many people would have thought I would have taken the job but I was brought in to help Andy [Hessenthaler] but to end up taking his job just doesn’t seem right to me.”

Brentford manager Martin Allen is also thought to be in the frame, but he has publicly distanced himself from the job saying he is happy at Griffin Park.
