Gills stomach bug strikes again

Mark McCammon was forced to leave the field early against Notts County

The mystery stomach bug that has been sweeping Gillingham Football Club struck again on Tuesday night.

This time Mark McCammon was forced into leaving the field early against Notts County after picking up an illness.

The striker became the fourth Gillingham player in recent weeks to go down with a bug after Curtis Weston, Dennis Oli and Mark Bentley all suffered with it.

Manager Mark Stimson vowed to look into the situation last week and it returned to claim another victim at Notts County.

“This last month has been crazy,” admitted Stimson.

“Maybe they are mixing their drink and their food and taking too much on board, because we are telling the players to load up on their energy with their food and their drink or they will run out of steam, and we don’t want them to do that.

“Some of them might be putting a bit extra in their stomach and it’s come out at the wrong time.”

Bentley, a recent victim, admitted the players are taking more responsibility with hygiene since the bug struck.

He said: “If you get one bug it seems to filter through the squad so hopefully we’ll stamp down on that. We’ve tried cleaning more stuff this week and eating properly. It might just be a simple bug.”
