Goalscoring keeper enters Gate history books

PETER TREGO: Scored direct from a free kick

PETER TREGO became the third Margate goalkeeper in the club's history to score in a competitive match with an 86th minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Nationwide South play-off contenders Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.

The former Kent cricketer emulated the achievement of former favourites Joe Radford (at Poole), and Lee Turner (at Hartsdown Park against Bashley), as a free kick from his own half sailed over the head of his opposite number, former Whitstable and Ramsgate stopper Lee Hook.

Club historian and statiscian Jeff Trice, who was at the game, said: "Joe and Lee's goals both came from drop-kicks, but Trego certainly looked as though he meant it."

However, the result still leaves the Thanet club needing to win their final two games at Havant and Waterlooville and Bishop's Stortford, to have any chance of avoiding the drop and hope fellow strugglers Carshalton Athletic, Maidenhead United and Newport County-slip up.
