SAGGERS: man of the moment

KENT fast bowler Martin Saggers wrote his name into the Test history books with a wicket on his home debut in Leeds.

The 32-year-old bowled New Zealand's Mark Richardson when the second Test finally got underway at Headingley this afternoon.

Saggers cleaned bowled the in-form opener to become only the fifth Englishman to take a wicket with his first Test delivery on home soil.

The last man to achieve the feat was Richard Illingworth, who bowled West Indies' all-rounder Phil Simmons with his first delivery of the Trent Bridge Test of 1991.

Saggers was selected to replace Simon Jones who will probably be out of action for about seven weeks with a foot injury.

The Kiwis added Michael Papps to the side which lost at Lord's, with the injured Craig McMillan missing out and Jacob Oram playing as a batsman only.

Play started over two hours late after the morning session was washed out. Shortly after Saggers struck rain again held up play.
