Kent League chair Denise Richmond has welcomed the progress made by Guernsey United

Kent League chair Denise Richmond has warned there are more obstacles to overcome before a team from Guernsey can join the Bulmers Cider Kent League.

The Guernsey FA have given permission for a new Island team to apply to enter the Kent League.

But, while Ms Richmond has welcomed the development, she has stated that there is still plenty of work ahead to make it a reality.

"They've taken the first step and there are several more they need to complete before they can compete at senior level," she said.

"Whether that happens in time for them to apply for the Kent League next season or the one after remains to be seen.

"We'd still welcome their application because we're looking at all avenues (to expand the league). It's a positive sign in many respects because they've been battling for six months to get permission."

The club will have to change its name from Guernsey United but the new name has not yet been made public.

In order to make the step into senior football, the new club will have to meet the requirements of the English FA's Leagues Committee.
