Joe Healy scored his 10th goal of the season as Welling moved back into the top half of the Skrill Premier on Tuesday.

A display full of energy and determination saw them beat play-off hopefuls Gateshead in convincing fashion.

Welling started the game at a frantic pace, with the forward line of Tobi Sho-Silva, Ross Lafayette and Toby Ajala causing all sorts of problems for the visitors.

It was no surprise when Healy drove home from the edge of the box to put Welling ahead inside seven minutes with his fifth goal in six games.

Harry Beautyman’s long-range shot was saved by keeper Adam Bartlett before Healy shot wide as Welling pressed for a second.

Gateshead were not without their chances, however, and they forced six first-half corners. On-loan Wings defender Tom Bender sliced wide of the his own goal after one corner was headed down while their best chance saw Jamie Chandler sent clean through but he shot wide as keeper Lee Butcher slid out.

At the other end, Welling nearly made it 2-0 when a good advantage by referee Colin Lymer saw Lafayette advance but Ajala failed to make serious contact with his right-wing cross.

It was all Welling after the break, the impressive Ajala forcing Barrett into a smart save from 20 yards and then Sho-Silva firing over first time after a measured through ball by Alfie Mawson.

The second goal finally arrived on 59 minutes when Beautyman’s corner was headed in by Mawson, with the aid of a slight deflection.

It took Gateshead until 76 minutes to have an effort at goal after the break, but Marcus Maddison’s shot went wide of the upright while had it not been for a couple of smart clearances from Barrett late on, Welling could have easily added a third on the break.

Welling, who are now on 46 points and sit 12th in the table, entertain Macclesfield at Park View Road this Saturday.
