CLEARED: Hessenthaler

THE Football Association has cleared player-manager Andy Hessenthaler of gesturing towards Norwich City supporters at the end of Gillingham's 1-0 win at Priestfield on February 25.

Hessenthaler was called to referee Clive Penton's room at the end of the game to be informed that he would be reported after receiving a complaint from a police officer and a steward.

The Gills boss vehemently denied the allegation and vowed to fight any charge.

He said: "All I did was to raise my clenched fist in the direction of our supporters to show how delighted I was with the result. It wasn't a rude gesture and it certainly wasn't aimed at the Norwich supporters.

"Had there been a charge against me I would have fought it all the way. I was livid when I was told I was being reported."

The FA decided against charging Hessenthaler after looking at the match day video.

An FA spokesman confirmed: "There is no basis for disciplinary action and the matter is now closed."
