A SECOND half goal from substitute Lomana LuaLua gave Premiership surprise package Portsmouth all three points against Charlton at The Valley on Saturday.

LuaLua picked the ball up with 16 minutes to play and sent a right-foot drive past Scott Carson from outside the box, via a slight deflection off makeshift defender Amdy Faye.

It came against the run of play in a second period dominated by the home side.

Winger Dennis Rommedahl had come close to giving the Addicks the lead with a stunning volley that flew just wide.

The home side almost got off to the perfect start when Rommedahl found Marcus Bent with a deep cross, but the striker's looping header came back off the crossbar.

Talal El Karkouri flashed a header from a corner just wide as the Addicks pressed in the opening stages.

But the best chance of the first half fell to Portsmouth's Kanu, who headed wide from close range with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

The visitors remain unbeaten in the Premiership and are the only side in league football yet to concede a goal this season. In contrast, Charlton have now lost four of their opening five Premiership fixtures.

Charlton: Carson, Kishishev (Lisbie 80), El Karkouri, Faye, Young, Pouso (Holland 57), Ambrose, Rommedahl, M Bent (Fortune h-t), Hasselbaink, D Bent.
Subs not used: Myhre, Ashton.
