Gillingham are holding Ipswich to a 1-1 draw at half time in the season opener.

Captain Paul Smith gave Gills the lead on 23 minutes when he took a pass from Darren Byfield and slid the ball home.

But the lead only lasted 12 minutes until Ipswich defender Richard Naylor headed home a Kevin Horlock corner.

Iwan Roberts, who was booked after just five seconds, should have made it 2-1 to Gills moments later but his header went over the bar.
