Danny Kedwell gave manager Peter Taylor food for thought after scoring for Gillingham's development squad on Wednesday.
Kedwell was making his first appearance for the Gills since recovering from a hernia operation.
He will now be pressing for a return to the squad when Gillingham travel to Bristol City on Saturday.
The 30-year-old strikers netted as the Gills lost 3-2 to a strong Luton Town side at AFC Dunstable’s Creasey Park.
Kedwell is fully fit again following his hernia operation.
Gills boss Peter Taylor was in the stands watching and he must now decide whether to risk Kedwell this weekend.
Kedwell hasn’t played since January 11 at Colchester. Prior to that he had been playing for several weeks with a hernia complaint.
He put Gills ahead in the game with a cool finish, after flicking the ball over a defender before burying the chance.
Charlie Lee was also on target for the Gills, making it 2-2 after Luton had struck twice, but a late goal from Mark Cullen, fired past Sam Baxter, won it for the home side.
Also featuring for the Gills was striker Adam Birchall, who remains available for loan.
