Gillingham have made their first signing of the summer with the arrival of goalkeeper Glenn Morris.

And Gills boss Peter Taylor hopes the new recruit will push last season’s number one Stuart Nelson for his shirt.

Taylor said: “Last year Stuart was fantastic but he wasn’t pushed and I told him that I think he could have been even better.

“There were certain times where there were goals given away that I didn’t like but he had no competition. Now he will have competition and that’s very important.”

Nelson played every minute of every game last season, with inexperienced back-up keepers George Howard and Sam Baxter unable to shift him.

Morris has far more experience than Howard or Baxter and last season was a regular for Aldershot in the Skrill Premier, making 31 appearances for the club.

The 30-year-old has agreed a one year contract at Gillingham, after rejecting an offer of extending his stray at Aldershot. His deal starts on July 1.

Morris started as a trainee at Leyton Orient and went onto make 124 league appearances for the club before being released in 2010.

He then spent two seasons at Southend United, making another 57 league appearances, before spending the next two seasons with Aldershot.
