FITNESS permitting, Kent’s Geraint Jones looks set to win a 32nd England Test cap after securing a vote of confidence from England coach Duncan Fletcher.

In an unusually public show of faith for Kent’s gloveman, Fletcher confirmed Jones would get the nod for the Brisbane opener ahead of Nottinghamshire’s Chris Read.

Jones was dropped during the home series against Pakistan after a run of poor batting scores, but Read’s inconsistency during the ICC Champions Trophy in India left the door ajar for a quick recall.

Fletcher said: "Looking at the pressure that he (Jones) has played under before we believe he handles the pressure better, and technically, we think he’s a better player on these wickets and especially in Test match cricket."

Jones, an integral figure in England’s Ashes success in 2005, won 31 consecutive caps before being axed.
