Kent's 'Uncle Don' turns 90

THE man most Kent cricketers refer to as "Uncle Don" celebrates his 90th birthday on Saturday.

A St Lawrence legend in his own right, Don Beney from West Wickham has served on the benefit committee of numerous county players as well as organising his own fund-raising golf days for the past 24 years.

Club president in 1993, Mr Beney served the club’s general committee with distinction for 18 years through to 1992 and enjoyed the proud record of never having missed a meeting.

He and his wife Pam will celebrate his birthday with a small band of family and friends with lunch at the Chapter One Restaurant at Farnborough Common near Bromley.

A club vice-president and arguably Kent's most passionate supporter, Kent's players and administrators all join me in wishing Mr Beney many happy returns.
