THE long-running saga of the redevelopment of Margate FC's ground has taken another twist with a further planning application being considered by councillors.

Since the multi-million pound scheme was unveiled in September 2001, the club and the council have discussed a variety of options for the expansion of the Hartsdown Park stadium.

The club wants to improve and upgrade the stadium complex to meet Conference league standards and this season is playing all its home games at Dover’s Crabble ground. It also wants to develop further leisure activities for provide an income stream.

A public campaign was launched earlier this year by local residents opposed the leisure application that initially asked for a casino, a theme pub, hotel and other facilities to be build on the former council-owned nursery site at the rear of the ground. They also objected to the possible loss of part of the parkland.

This Thursday (December 5) councillors will consider an amended application that will include an 80-bedroom hotel, conference and banqueting centre, and a leisure and fitness club, together with a theme bar. It does not include a casino or bingo hall.
