Cody McDonald is hoping goals will win him back a starting place in the Gillingham team.

The summer signing opened his account for the season on Saturday with an 85th-minute equaliser against Swindon after coming on as a substitute, and will now be vying for a start against Bristol City this weekend.

McDonald said: “The manager spoke to me on Friday night and said I would be coming on without a doubt. It has worked out.

“I want to be starting games, obviously, but the other two lads were great and they proper bullied the two centre-halves.

"If that’s the role the manager wants me to do, to come on as a substitute, then hopefully I will score a few more goals.

“If the (strikers who start) are doing as well as what they are then I can’t complain. I just have to keep pushing for a starting place and there is no better way than scoring goals.”
