ALL SMILES: Church with the trophy

KENT pool star Jordan Church, whose nickname is Mr No Fear, was crowned Junior World Champion at Blackpool.

The 16-year-old added his name to the Burroughes and Watts World Junior 8-ball roll of honour by beating English rival Richard Twomey in the final.

Church, from Medway, became the first English winner of the event for four years after battling his way through eight rounds.

After the preliminary stages he saw off the Western Australia champion Andrew Jarrett 5-3 in the first round proper before beating Ireland’s Darren Feehen 5-2 in the second.

Scot Craig Cameron was swept aside 5-1 in the third round and Irish No.1 Eric Doyle was thrashed 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

Church, who has been English junior No.1 for the past two years, then beat Matt Barcock 5-3 in the semi-finals before recovering from 2-0 down to beat Twomey 7-3 in the final.

Les Church, Jordan’s father and chairman of the English Pool Association, said: “Jordan has won nearly 100 trophies but the World Championship is the big one.

“He’s worked hard at his game and it paid off. After he went 2-0 down in the final, he stormed back and deserved his victory.”

Jordan is due to play in the Kent Youth Open at Chatham Snooker Club on June 12 and 13.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the up and coming pool player is asked to phone Les Church on 07931 801740.
