Gillingham goalkeeper Stuart Nelson heads into the new season insisting he has nothing to prove.

Nelson missed just 110 minutes of Gillingham’s League 2 title campaign.

He joined the Gills last summer, having surprisingly being made a free agent by Notts County, following two seasons of being the regular first-choice keeper at the County Ground.

“I have played five full seasons in League 1 altogether, over 300 games, and have nothing to prove to anyone,” said the 31-year-old.

“Obviously it drives you on when people knock you back. I have had knock backs all my career and have just come back from them.

“I have got to where I have got through hard work and never taking my foot off the pedal.

“But, I haven’t got anything to prove to anyone. All I am proving is to myself and ultimately to the club I am playing for and at this time it’s Gillingham. This has been the best season of my career.

“We’ve won the championship, we’re going back to League 1 and I can’t ask for anymore than that.”
