IFFY ONUORA’S match-winning goal in Gillingham’s 3-2 thriller at Watford on Sunday will not be his last for the club, manager Andy Hessenthaler has vowed.

The striker, who crowned an exceptional performance with an 84th minute winner, disclosed on Friday he had been offered a new one-year deal on the same terms as his existing contract.

Eleven-goal Onuora wants a two-year contract and hinted that two clubs had expressed an interest. Since the turn of the year, there have been persistent rumours linking him with a coaching role at the club. Hessenthaler, who singled out Onuora for praise afterwards, said: “I thought Iffy was outstanding and, hopefully, my chairman watching the game, will be convinced that he needs to be tied to the club for another season, if not two.

“That’s something I will be working on in the next few days. Iffy will go away on holiday and leave it to his representatives to get something sorted out. I’m pretty confident that we’ll have Iffy Onuora at this football club next season.”

Midfielders Marcus Browning and Mark Saunders have still to commit their futures to the club. Browning and his agent remain in negotiations while Saunders has still to sign his deal.
