Charlton manager Alan Pardew pulled no punches after watching his side toss away an early lead against Preston at Deepdale on Saturday.

He said: "We set our stall out in beating Reading last week and there were more than a few players out there against Preston who should look at their performances because apart from three exceptions we fell well short.

"I'm scratching my head because apart from one change it was the same sides. When we got the goal, we should have pushed on but for some reason we didn't.

"Preston are a good side but we should have locked them down. We were second best in so many areas, especially in midfield.

"We've a free two weeks now and there will be lot of work done on the training ground.

"I'm hoping to being in another defender before the transfer window closes."

The Addicks went ahead on 18 minutes when Andy Gray netted from the penalty spot after Youl Mawene had brought down Luke Varney.

But Neil Mellor - who had been denied by a fine Nicky Weaver stop 11 minutes into the second half - levelled for the home side in the 58th minute when he lashed in from close range after Chris Sedgwick's deflected cross had fallen kindly for him.

And Preston found themselves ahead just eight minutes later when Barry Nicholson poked the ball under Addicks keeper Nicky Weaver after it had been flicked back in by BIlly Jones.
