Joe Healy missed an injury-time penalty as Welling were held to a goalless draw in the Skrill Premier by 10-man Salisbury on Monday.

The Wings played against 10 men for more than half the game but were unable to make their advantage count.

Visiting keeper Will Puddy clattered into Doug Bergqvist in the fourth minute of stoppages and referee Justin Amey pointed to the spot.

Puddy somehow stayed on the pitch instead of collecting at best a second yellow card but Healy, who had missed two spot-kicks in pre-season, put his penalty wide of the upright and, within a minute, the full-time whistle was blown.

It capped a frustrating afternoon for Jamie Day’s Welling side. Healy was denied by Puddy as early as the fourth minute while the Salisbury keeper was out smartly to deny the industrious Kurtis Guthrie just after the half-hour.

Salisbury were reduced to 10 men on 42 minutes when referee Amey deemed Theo Lewis was not in control of his challenge against Guthrie and showed a straight red card.

The visitors forced Lee Butcher into his only save of the afternoon on 62 minutes while two minutes later Welling’s Loick Pires saw his header ruled out for offside.

Substitute Ben Wright missed a glorious opening to give Salisbury the lead with 15 minutes left, a miss equalled only by Ross Lafayette totally missing his kick from Pires’ 82-minute knockdown at the other end.

Puddy was then booked for timewasting but Healy, after a two-minute delay from award to taking the spot-kick, blew the chance to put Welling within a point of top spot.
