Ivan Campo: Valley bound?

Charlton have opened negotiations with Coca-Cola Championship rivals Ipswich for a swap deal that would see Darren Ambrose move to Portman Road and former Real Madrid midfielder Ivan Campo arrive at The Valley.

Ipswich manager Jim Magilton confirmed he was approached by opposite number Alan Pardew after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw regarding the player swap.

Ambrose, 24, recently hinted that he would welcome a return to his first club who sold him to Newcastle for £1million five-and-a-half years ago.

He is out of contract at the season’s end and no new deal has been forthcoming.

Magilton has made no secret of his admiration for Ambrose and said recently: "I would love to bring him back here."

Campo, 34, was outstanding for Ipswich in their 2-1 defeat at The Valley on October 4 and it came as a surprise when Magilton withdrew him in the second half.

Since signing a two-year deal for Ipswich following his release on a free by Bolton in August he has made eight appearances.

Born in San Sebastian, he joined Bolton on a free from Real Madrid in 2002 and became a regular in the Premier League under former boss Sam Allardyce.

Meanwhile, the Addicks have allowed striker Stuart Fleetwood to join Brighton on a month’s loan after arriving back this week from a loan period with Cheltenham.
