MULTI-SPORT athlete Nick Herlihy, 16, from Mersham, near Ashford, who achieved his ambitious plans for this season when he was crowned British Junior Short Course Quadrathlon champion recently, contested the British Jubilee event at Wadenhoe, near Peterborough on Sunday.

The race involved swimming 400 yards in the River Nene, kayaking for three miles along the river, riding a bike for six miles across deeply rutted fields and then running three miles cross country.

Herlihy finished in 21st place with a time of 1 hour 35 minutes and 55 seconds. But the next Junior was still nearly 15 minutes back, securing Nick the British crown. His two wins from two quadrathlon national trophy competition rounds mean that he has sewn up the overall British Junior Championship without even needing to start in the final round of the series in Bude in Cornwall this September.

However, the event in Bude on September 28 is the British Open Championship, and Herlihy will be seeking a hat trick of wins from the three National Trophy rounds, as well as a hat trick of British Championship titles.
