GILLINGHAM have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of Hearts striker Gary Wales.

But the club have failed in an attempt to bring Trinidad goal-keeper Kelvin Jack to Priestfield.

Wales, 25, has signed until the end of the season and goes straight into the squad for Saturday's match at West Ham.

Wales started his career with Hamilton, scoring 11 goals in 30 starts before making a £50,000 move to Hearts in July 1999. At Tynecastle, he scored 17 goals in 51 starts.

He is no stranger to the Nationwide League, Division One, having spent a period on loan with Walsall in January. He scored one goal in seven appearances before heading back to Scotland.

Gillingham coach Wayne Jones said: “He’s not a big lad but he is quick around the penalty area and knows how to finish.'”

Jack has declined a move to Priestfield in favour of Division One rivals Reading until the end of the season.
