Welling 3 Bromley 1

Charlie Sheringham took his tally for the season to 16 with a brace in Welling's New Year's Day win over rivals.

The Wings repeated their Boxing Day success at Hayes Lane by the same scoreline to move into fourth place in Blue Square South.

Sheringham confirmed his return to top form with a goal in either half as the home side turned on the style in front of an excellent crowd of 1,255.

Manager Andy Ford admitted: "I've got to pat our fans on the back, they were excellent and turned up in numbers.

"I don't know how many of that crowd were floating supporters but when you get that many people through the gate you need to put a show on - and we did that.

"Hopefully we'll bring them back again, winning games gives confidence to players and also brings fans back again."

Unlike their Boxing Day win, Welling took control of the game early on. Tony Sinclair's header was cleared off the line before they were awarded a penalty on the half-hour when Rob Quinn was tripped.

Sheringham sent keeper Gareth Williams the wrong way from the spot to put his side ahead.

Bromley should have equalised two minutes later when Sinclair's error let in Billy Crook but he fired straight at Clark Masters.

Sheringham volleyed wide moments later before Moses Ademola's low shot was pounced on by Williams just before the break.

Welling doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half when Sinclair headed on Lee Blackburn's corner - one of 16 Welling won in the game - and Loui Fazackerley nodded in from close range against his former club.

Ryan Hall beat the offside trap just past the hour mark and produced a smart finish beyond Masters to give Bromley hope.

But a brilliant piece of skill from man of the match Sheringham saw him collect Fazackerley's cross and volley home in one movement with his back to goal for his 16th goal of the season.

Welling travel to Basingstoke on Saturday while Bromley host Havant & Waterlooville.
