Spiller earns draw for Gills

GILLINGHAM secured a point courtesy of a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Rotherham at Millmoor on Saturday.

Andy Hessenthaler's side started brightly with Marlon King going closest to finding the back of the net after 14 minutes but his free-kick was well saved by Mike Pollitt.

Rotherham came close to taking the lead moments later but Jason Brown made an excellent double save from Andy Monkhouse.

King was forced to come off with a hamstring strain on the hour mark, but it didn't prevent the visitors from taking the lead on 36 minutes when Danny Spiller's over-head kick found the corner of the net.

If the first period belonged to Gillingham, the second half followed a different pattern as the Millers dominated.

After substitute Paul Warne went close on two occasions, Rotherham equalised from the penalty spot when Scott Minto was upended by Nayron Nosworthy. Darren Byfield made no mistake with the spot kick.

Rotherham could, and should, have won it in the closing stage but Chris Sedgwick hit the sidenetting from close range when it was easier to score.
