SORONDO: out for four to six weeks

Charlton v Bolton

CHARLTON have suffered a second major injury blow with the loss of central defender Gonzalo Sorondo for six to eight weeks.

Manager Iain Dowie disclosed that the Uruguayan international sustained a stress fracture in a back joint in a challenge with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood after coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Upton Park.

“He stiffened up and a scan showed the fracture,” said boss Iain Dowie. “He’ll be out for four to six weeks, which is a disappointment because he brings pace to the defence.”

Charlton are already without midfielder Jerome Thomas, who is recovering after breaking a foot during the club’s pre-season preparation.

Andy Reid looks likely to make his home debut against Bolton at The Valley on Saturday.

The former Tottenham midfielder missed Wednesday’s 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United after suffering back spasms on the morning of the match.

Charlton find themselves bottom of the Barclays Premier League after two games having conceded six goals and Dowie admitted: “We need a big, big performance against Bolton because we owe the supporters who really got behind us on Wednesday against Manchester United.”

Bolton could give a debut to former Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka who signed on Thursday night in a club record £8 million deal.
