Gary Mulligan: hoping to start

Gillingham v Port Vale

Gary Mulligan is facing a race against time to be fit for Saturday's crunch game against Port Vale.

Gillingham need to impress after two straight defeats on the road and with fellow striker Mark McCammon starting a three-match ban, the chance is there for Mulligan to return.

Mulligan rated his chances of making a comeback as "70 per cent" during the week and he’s hoping his input will help get the club’s promotion hopes back on course.

After starting the season on the bench, Mulligan finally forced his way into the starting 11 against Grimsby - but a knee injury left him limping out of the 3-0 win.

The injury hasn’t dampened Mulligan’s enthusiasm, however, and after missing the last two games, he’s itching to get back involved.

He said: "Hopefully, I can get back in the team, get some goals and get us back in the top six."

If Mulligan fails to win his fitness battle then manager Mark Stimson could call on either of his young strikers Andy Pugh or Luis Cumbers to partner Simeon Jackson in attack.

Cumbers is the player likely to get the nod after making a substitute appearance against Aldershot last Saturday.

Dennis Oli (foot) is also battling to be fit for the game.

Meanwhile, Stimson was due to discuss extending Charlie Daniels’ loan deal with the player on Thursday.

A decision on Tyrone Berry’s future will be made after Saturday’s game. The midfielder’s one-month deal at Priestfield runs out after this weekend.
