Peter Taylor’s interim management role came to an end on Saturday and he now wants to know if he’s wanted permanently, sooner rather than later.

Since returning to the club, Taylor has guided the Gills to two wins from four League 1 matches. He was relieved at the weekend to see the side scrape into the draw for the second round of the FA Cup.

That performance against Brackley, which ended 1-1, hasn’t taken any of the shine off the prospect of managing the Gills.

And the former England caretaker boss will be keen on getting a decision from chairman Paul Scally imminently.

“As far as I am concerned I think I would need to know quite sharpish,” said the 60-year-old.

“Nothing has changed for me and 90 minutes of football will never change that in my opinion. I will work as hard as I can to get the players to work as hard as they can and that’s the game we are in.

“I have loved it (since returning) but as a manager sometimes you take things ten times more badly or happier when you get a result or not but thankfully when you have the experience I have got you then settle down in the evening, wake up in the morning and you’re up for it.

“The performance (on Saturday) was not what we are looking for; we are looking for better than that but the FA Cup always has shocks and I am sure a lot of those shocks are because teams get nervous as they are playing against players from lower divisions than us. They know there is everything to lose and that’s what happened."
