Peter Taylor was pleased with his side’s character on Tuesday night but criticised the quality.

His Gillingham side went down 2-0 at Peterborough and the manager felt this side’s ball retention and distribution could have been better.

He said: “The first goal was a disappointing to give away because we had the ball in our left-back position, not by our left-back but we lost it and then they score.

“You then have to stick together and fight like mad because Peterborough are a good team and they had lots of possession - and we did that.

“A wonder-goal, of course, gets them the second and we lose a little bit of discipline, when they then get the penalty but I can’t complain about the way the boys kept at it and kept working, no complaints at all.

“We got Myles Weston in and Cody McDonald was looking a threat. If we had of had a bit more belief in passing the ball, then we might have asked a few more questions of Peterborough.

“There were times where they had the ball, lots of the ball, because they are a good team. We then win the ball but we’ve got no patience and all of a sudden we go too long, too early and we lose the ball again and we defend too much. Those are the little things we need to improve on.”

Taylor made a switch at the break by bringing Adebayo Akinfenwa on for Amine Linganzi. It was a move he had done recently a Bradford to get a result after being 1-0 down at the break. But it didn’t work on Tuesday night.

“You just hope that maybe Bayo can come on and do what he did at half-time when he came on at Bradford," said the Gills boss.

“To be fair, one of the first things he did was to put Cody through with a flick and he nearly chipped one in like Bradley did on Saturday.”

Peterborough’s second goal came just before the hour mark.

Taylor added: “They are good, you have to match them and you have to stand up to them. I felt as though we did that but we should have kept the ball a bit more.

“I have got no complaints about them because they carried on working and it’s not an easy place to get the ball.”

Charlie Lee - "It was a night I won't forget."
