Gillingham assistant manager John Schofield

For players and fans alike, the start of the new season is a time of great excitement - even more so this year having moved up a division.

It’s our first opportunity to try and get some points on the board and we can’t wait to get started on Saturday.

Our targets and focus are the same as last year; we want to win every game and get as many points as we can.

We’ve added new faces to what was already a decent recipe and what we are trying to do is to keep improving the ingredients we put in.

We have made good additions and they have been a pleasure to work with. It’s credit to the lads who are still at the club as well because they set the standard.

Anybody that comes in has to live up to those standards that the lads are setting. The players we have got have a great work ethic and a desire to improve and it rubs off on the people who come in.

It was nice to get away for a couple of weeks in the summer and it’s important now we look forward and build on last year.

We have taken a lot of positives out of the pre-season games and when you consider the sides we’ve played, top Championship sides and a Premier League club, we did well.
