WELLING UNITED travel to high-flying Hampton & Richmond in the Blue Square South on Saturday desperate for some new year points.

Neil Smith's illness and injury-ravaged side have gone eight games and two months without a league win while Hampton's New Year's Day defeat at Sutton United was their first in the league since September.

Smith, who is facing increasing frustration from the terraces as Welling sit just above the drop zone, said: "I am not going to walk away and hide, I am going to put myself on the line.

"It is going to be a tough game but we are in a dogfight and we need to get some results to get ourselves out of it."

The player-manager is sweating on the fitness of Leon Solomon, Joe Howe and Omari Coleman while Richard Carpenter (knee) continues to play through the pain barrier.

However, although Smith, Jamie Turner and Chris Moore were all suffering from flu in the New Year's Day defeat at Fisher they should have recovered fully for the trip to play-off hopefuls Hampton.
