James Tredwell claimed his first five-wicket haul for almost two years in the rain-hit LV=County Championship Division 2 draw at Worcestershire, but admitted he has bowled better this season with no reward.

Kent recovered from a shaky 25-4 on the opening morning at New Road to make 324 on the back of a fifth-wicket stand of 174 between Darren Stevens (95) and Ben Harmison (96) and valuable late runs from Calum Haggett (34 not out) and Mitch Claydon (33).

The Worcestershire reply spanned three days – 19-year-old Tom Fell finishing unbeaten, just six short of his maiden first-class hundred. He and Jack Shantry (54) added 126 for the eighth wicket as Worcestershire recovered well from 158-7 to finish on 284-8, and further frustrate Kent hopes.

Umpires Rob Bailey and Michael Gough called things off around 3pm on Monday afternoon.

Both counties took eight points from the game

Tredwell’s last five-wicket championship haul was against Surrey at Canterbury in 2011.

He said: “I got three in each innings against Hampshire and have felt the ball has been coming out well. I didn’t think I bowled as well as I have when I got nothing.”

Kent are back at New Road on Sunday in the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition, the first of three games in five days.
