Trucks thunder into Brands for season finale

BRANDS Hatch is ending its season with a bang as one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport makes a welcome return to the track after an absence of 11 years this weekend.

Truck racing last happened at the Kent circuit in April 1994 but the British Truck Racing Association Championship will thunder back into town for its season finale.

Each of the 18 race trucks that will line up on the grid on Sunday will weigh five tons but, with 12-litre engines pumping out up to 1000bhp, these giant leviathans are not short on power or acceleration.

And the two races on Sunday will be the deciding rounds of the 2005 British Truck Racing Association Championship, where ERF driver Steve Horne and Sisu driver David Jenkins are separated by just a single point, and Ross Garrett a further six behind, with 22 up for grabs this weekend.

There will be several contenders for race wins but for most visitors the spectacle of seeing 18 of these monsters dicing and powersliding their way around the twisty 1.2-mile Indy circuit should provide plenty of entertainment whoever wins.

Horne said: "It's been 10 years since I last raced around here in a truck but this circuit still gives me a real buzz. I'm sure it's going to be a great venue for the finale of the 2005 season."

The Truck Superprix will be supported by the Formula Renault UK Winter Series, Renault Clio Cup Winter Series, the Ginetta Sportscar Winter Series and the Legends Championship.

* Tickets cost £15 for adults while children aged 12 and under can get in free. Parking and paddock access is also free.
