WELLING missed out on the chance to regain top spot in Nationwide Conference South on an emotional afternoon at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings, still mourning the death of general manager Graham Hobbins earlier in the week, let a half-time lead slip as Stortford boosted their own play-off aspirations.

After a minute's silence was impeccably observed, Welling despite starting brightly fell behind as early as the seventh minute.

Striker Danny Morgan nipped past Chris Moore and slid the ball under on loan keeper David Wilkinson.

The lead was short-lived, however, and the Wings were back on level terms three minutes later when Jamie Day's far post corner was headed in by Steve Perkins.

Wilkinson produced a great save to deny John Turner, before Morgan went clean through but saw his effort cleared off the line by Mark Goodfellow.

Welling took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Danny Kedwell broke through and forced the ball home at the third attempt.

Tony Battersby and Kedwell both went close before the visitors equalised on 62 minutes as Morgan set up Max Porter to drive home.

Welling had strong appeals for a penalty turned down five minutes from time and the visitors nicked a late winner when substitute Ashley Fuller's corner went straight in at the near post.

The result sent Stortford top of the table.
