Margate's director of football Terry Yorath

Margate’s new director of football is under no illusions of the need for a swift return to winning ways.

Terry Yorath, the former manager of the Welsh national side, was presented to fans at Hartsdown Park last night and declared: “Results are the most important thing; above all, we’re looking for a winning side”.

The 58-year-old, who has also managed top flight teams including Leeds United, Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday, said: “I want to enjoy the football and I want to have a team where I can get out on the training field and help out wherever I can.”

Yorath will be offering support to former Gillingham stars Barry Ashby and Paul Smith, who have joined Margate as manager and player/coach respectively.

He joked: “I’ve never worked with them before but they’ve both scored goals against clubs I’ve managed!

“They’re very experienced players and have excellent connections in the non-league scene. That’s something I haven’t got, so I’ll be learning from them as well.

“I’ll be there for them to help with any problems they have. I’ll be a pair of eyes to begin with, perhaps giving a bit of advice as well.”
