A pedestrian was badly injured in accident involving two vehicles in Maidstone town centre.

Police and South East Coast Ambulance were called to the collision in Palace Avenue, outside the police station, at around 1.50pm.

A man in his 50s was treated at the side of the road, near to the entrance of Robins and Day Peugeot dealership, before being taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

He suffered ankle and shoulder injuries, but was fully conscious.

The road was closed at the junction with Mill Street to allow the air ambulance to land but the helicopter did not stop at the scene.

A paramedic from the air ambulance travelled with paramedics to the hospital by road.

Traffic was being diverted along Maidstone High Street until one lane was reopened just before 3pm. All lanes are now open, although there are delays in the area.

Around 12 police officers were at the scene, as well as two ambulances and one paramedic car.

The road was reopened at 3.15pm.
