Asylum hotel: man faces five charges

A YOUNG man accused of damaging Sittingbourne's Coniston Hotel and the town's police station has been remanded on conditional bail at Maidstone Crown Court.

Joseph Williams, 20, of Barrow Grove, Sittinbgbourne, is charged with drink-driving, driving without insurance, racially aggravated criminal damage, damaging property and aggravated vehicle taking.

Mr Williams was granted court bail until Wednesday, February 19, on condition that he lives and sleeps at his home, remains indoors between 9pm and 6am, and does not go within 250 yards of the Coniston Hotel in London Road.

There are plans to turn the three-star hotel into an induction centre for asylum seekers.
