Lulworth House Residential Home in Maidstone unveils nativity scene

Residents and staff at Lulworth House Residential Home in Maidstone are getting into the Christmas spirit after working together to build an intricate nativity scene.

The six-foot-long display was three months in the making and shows a quaint village scene with real moss, stones and hand-painted models.

Ana Modino, activities coordinator and Ashley Wilks, who does maintenance, came up with the idea as a way of involving everyone in the festive preparations.

The home in Queens Avenue supports up to 38 people living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, many of whom helped make and paint miniature clay props.

Mr Wilkes, 28 and of Union Street, said: "It is a great feeling to know it will bring joy to the residents and the families and friends of the residents as well as staff as well.

"It is great to see something so meaningful at Chrismas and something that captures the full story of Christmas itself."

This year staff and residents have an extra reason to celebrate after the home was found to be providing good care following a recent visit by the Care Quality Commission.

Inspectors found the home provided outstanding responsiveness to people's needs, supporting residents to be active in the community and to keep them and family involved in key decisions about their care.

This includes opening up a garden for green-fingered residents and the conversion of a summer house in a coffee shop.

The report notes: "The feedback we received from people and their relatives was excellent. People that used the service expressed great satisfaction and spoke very highly of the registered manager, deputy manager and the staff.

"Staff were motivated and committed to ensuring people lived a happy and fulfilled life the way they wanted to. There was an open culture where the management team led by example to ensure people received a high-quality person-centred service."
