There will be a carnival atmosphere in Maidstone town centre on Saturday as dozens of samba dancers, majorettes and singers parade through the streets.

More than 400 people are expected to join the Maidstone Arts Parade from 3.45pm, which will begin at County Hall and move through the town, ending with a gathering at Jubilee Square.

The town’s three beasts from its crest - an iguanodon, a horse and a lion - will lead the procession, which features all ages from nine up to 90, and more than 20 local groups, including the Maidstone Singers and Harmony Variety Group.

They include Blocco Foggo, the Mandy Ellen Dance Troupe, Maidstone Baton Twirlers, Directions Stage School, Hopshed Theatre and Margaret Preedy Dance School.

Organised by the Town Team in conjunction with Maidstone Area Arts Partnership and supported by Maidstone council, the parade includes a two-hour showcase of performances, opened by the Mayor, Cllr Richard Thick.

Ken Scott, chairman of the team’s events group, said: “A colourful and joyously noisy spectacle is guaranteed.”

The festivities are expected to last until around 6.30pm.
