Carry out that pre-winter home check

WITH winter almost here, insurer Hiscox is advising homeowners to weather proof their home by carrying out an immediate inspection.

To help prevent damage to property this year, Hiscox advises the following:

* Check the roof for slipped tiles. Any loose tiles may be blown off in a storm and cause damage to buildings, gardens or vehicles.

* Make sure all gutters around the house are clear. Blocked guttering can lead to water damage inside and outside the house.

* Clear drains accesses. Again, blocked drains can cause flooding.

* Make sure all outdoor items of furniture are put away. This will prevent weather damage to the items and stop them being blown over and damaged - or even stop them damaging buildings and vehicles.

* Close all windows, doors, gates and garage doors. This will stop water seeping inside buildings and causing damage.

Kevin Kerridge, director of Hiscox Direct, said: "As well as carrying out a pre-winter inspection of your home, we recommend double checking your home whenever bad weather is predicted. We also advise being present at your property if a storm is expected. This can help mitigate any damage or give you the chance to take extra preventative action. If this is not possible, make sure you have someone who can check the property for you."

Hiscox also warns householders who have been flooded previously to make sure they have sandbags ready to use and to remove any valuable items from the cellar or ground floor if heavy rain is predicted.
