A long abandoned supermarket could finally have a new purpose in a town centre.

My Local in Week Street, Maidstone closed in 2016, a year after another company took over the site from Morrisons.

After three years without a permanent owner homeless charity Making A Difference to Maidstone (MADM) has its sights on the store.

Right now the charity has shops in Church Street and The Mall, but a move on to Week Street would mark some big changes.

Amanda Sidwell said: "If we are successful we will close the shop in The Mall and Church Street will become our outreach centre and hub.

"Morrisons has walk in cold stores which would be perfect as we're looking to expand our food bank offering.

"Right now we're going to four different food providers a week picking up fruit and veg so having that cold storage could make a real difference.

"It will be a lot easier for our volunteers too, we're trying to make sure we're as efficient and effective as possible at helping people in need.

"Just today I heard on the news about how our high streets and town centres are empty so this is a really good opportunity to fill an empty shop.

"We've looked at five different properties including Mothercare at the other end of Week Street, but they were only offering a year's lease, that was never going to be long enough"

The team at MADM is viewing the old Morrisons site again this week.
