Firefighters tackle waste plant blaze

A TON of rubbish and hydraulic pumps were destroyed today in a fire at the Allington incinerator on the 20/20 industrial estate near Maidstone.

More than a dozen firefighters were called to the blaze at about 9.30am. They were stood down at around 11.20am. There was some smoke damage to a large funnel.

The incinerator processes up to 500,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste from households in and around Kent for energy recovery and up to 65,000 tonnes a year for recycling.
