Yesterday's heavy rain has prompted the Environment Agency to issue a flood warning for the River Beult and the lower River Medway.

The agency says flooding is possible along the Beult from Pluckley and Bethersden to Hampstead Lock at Yalding, including Smarden, Headcorn, Collier Street, Benover and The Lees.

The level of the river has risen considerably after a week of rain and low-lying fields are expected to see some flooding today.

Levels in Smarden peaked around midnight and should now be falling. Levels through Yalding will be highest today and falling away tomorrow, Sunday.

Today's weather is forecast to be dry, although showers are expected again tomorrow.

The agency said it would continual to monitor the situation and issue further warnings if necessary.
