Maidstone United defender Steve Watt kicked off the fun at Wateringbury Primary School’s summer fete on Saturday, which - of course - had a World Cup theme.

The children processed onto the school playing field waving the flags of the participating nations and pushing decorated wheelbarrows in lieu of floats.

The chairman of the Friends of Wateringbury School, Gail Isted, said: “It was a very colourful and noisy occasion, with a real Brazilian carnival atmosphere.

“It was a day of sunshine and smiles.”

There was a Beat the Goalie competition, table football and a Spot the Ball competition provided by the Kent Messenger.

The fete raised £3,600 for school funds, but despite the football-them, the youngsters were most interested in throwing a wet sponge at head teacher Chasey Crawford Usher in the stocks.

Mrs Isted said: “The queue for that was longer than the queue for ice-creams and the barbecue combined!”
