A gas leak closed off a village yesterday afternoon.

Fumes were detected near the junction of Lees Road and Symonds Lane, in Yalding, Maidstone.

Kent Police arrived at about 5.30pm and closed the area while engineers repaired the fault.

Road blocks were enforced between Gravelly Way and Hampstead Lane, and where Symonds Lane meets Benover Road.

The Highways Agency also attended.

No evacuations were necessary.
