The crown in custard pie throwing went to a team of Grannies in Coxheath’s annual flan-flinging contest on yesterday.

More than 2,000 people gathered to watch as 12 twelve teams took part in the spectacle, which was inspired by Charlie Chaplin and has been going since the 1960s.

Contestants dressed as old aged pensioners, complete with zimmerframes and mobility scooters, proved to be surprisingly sprightly and beat last year’s winner Pie ‘N’ Smash in the final.

Around 1,600 pies were thrown on the battleground, in Stockett Lane, with local scouts mixing up buckets of the custard mixture.
